How I Lost the Baby Weight (55 Pounds)

Let’s start at the beginning.

All my life I’ve been in pretty good shape, but I didn’t start working out until college.  I liked the way lifting weights helped turn my skinny body into a stronger, more muscular shape.  In the six months before I got pregnant, I was working out with a trainer a couple times a week, doing a couple days of cardio, and eating pretty clean.

My goal was to get in bikini shape for my sister-in-law’s wedding in Vegas that June.  I also colored my hair dark brown!  This pic was taken in Vegas at the Bachelorette party.  I’m about 5’1 and weigh about 106 pounds here.

I also got pregnant that month!  Here I am about two weeks pregnant.  And morning sickness was starting to kick in.

At the VERY beginning, I liked the changes to my body during pregnancy, i.e. bigger boobs!! ;)  But, then, for the first trimester of my pregnancy, I was exhausted.  I barely made it home from work without falling asleep.  I had no energy.  I stopped working out completely.  I gained weight- fast.  I remember one of my early prenatal visits and when the nurse lifted up my shirt to examine me, she kinda laughed and said, “you’re already wearing maternity jeans?”  Yes, ma’am- my regular pants already didn’t fit. 

I started eating whatever I wanted.  And what I wanted wasn’t healthy.  Things like ice cream and calorie rich Mexican dishes.  And even in the 2nd trimester when my energy returned, I still didn’t work out.  I didn’t work out my entire pregnancy.  I was so miserable, even though I was relatively healthy, but putting so much weight on my small frame was hard on me.  I’ll spare you the gory details. 

Fast forward to Christmas.  I remember that all I felt comfortable in was sweatpants- the thin kind you can almost sleep in.  And I still had 3 months to go!  At work, I was miserable - waddling to court and mediations, sweating, and pretty much wearing flip flops daily because my feet wouldn’t fit into regular shoes.

Oh, notice the Wii Fit sitting next to me? I asked my brother for that for Christmas, thinking I could start using it at home during that last trimester.  You guessed it- it’s NEVER been opened! 

Mid February- still 6 weeks to go!  Didn’t think I could get any bigger? Ha!  Here I am standing on our home’s foundation, wishing the house would hurry and get finished so we could move in!

And here I am at the very END of my pregnancy, and after gaining about 55 pounds! My poor swollen face and hands!

Ahhhh, welcoming the arrival of the baby!!  After James was born in March 2010, I was so looking forward to losing weight so that I could feel like myself again.  I was just so uncomfortable during my pregnancy!!

Within one week, I lost 20 pounds.  James was 7.5 of those:)  Another week later, I had lost 5 more pounds- that’s 25 down, and only 25 to go!

Even with 25 pounds lost, I was somewhat horrified to discover that, at this point, I still looked pregnant.  (But I’m happy to be standing in my future closet!)

I read this book during my pregnancy, “The Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy”, that said regarding the weight loss, “nine months up, nine months down.”  But I didn’t want to believe that.  Not me, I thought smugly.  I’ll be back in 6 months! 

WRONG!

One month after James’ birth, I went back to working out with my trainer (about once a week).  I also began really watching what I ate.

To achieve the body I’d really love to have, I’d have to eat something like this: 

• 6:00 a.m. Half a cup of oatmeal and five egg whites with chopped bell peppers and onions. 
• 9:00 a.m. Turkey meatloaf and one rice cake with two tablespoons of cinnamon cottage cheese on top. 
• 12:00 p.m. Five ounces of stir-fried chicken with half a cup of brown rice and steamed veggies.” 
• 3:00 p.m. Two corn tortillas topped with black beans, pepper, onions and five ounces of grilled chicken. 
• 6:00 p.m. Turkey meatloaf with a four-ounce sweet potato and one cup of steamed broccoli. 
• 9:00 p.m. Six boiled egg whites, cut in half and stuffed with water-packed canned tuna (mixed with celery, onions, mustard and spices). Plus, one toffuti pop.

But since I’m not trying to get that muscular, or that lean, I eat a modified version that looks more like this: 
  • 7:00 a.m.  1/2 cup oatmeal with raisins, almond slices, cinnamon, and skim milk.  Coffee with vanilla caramel creamer.
  • 10:00 a.m.  Greek yogurt with granola, strawberries, and blueberries.
  • 12:00 p.m.  Chipolte burrito bowl with rice, black beans, chicken, pico, and a little bit of sour cream
  • 3:00 p.m.  Protein bar or Starbuck’s iced tall mocha.
  • 6:00 p.m.  Chicken with veggies, shrimp pesto pasta, or turkey burger
  • 9:00 p.m.  Cereal, hershey kisses, or hot cocoa
Obviously, this is not consistent.  Sometimes I eat better than others, but I am good at eating small portions and stopping when I get full.  
By Mother’s day, 2 months later, I was starting to feel pretty good, but still had a belly and don’t remember what I weighed.

By this time, (7 months), I had lost 40 pounds (Yay!), but with only 15 pounds to go, I kinda lost steam.  Then came the holidays and the toffee and I hit the wall.  I stopped working out with the trainer and just enjoyed all the food that goes with the holidays, probably adding on about 5 pounds.

We bought a running stroller, but I only used it a couple of times.

With two months til James turned one, I was really hoping to lose those last 10 pounds.  But although my weight was coming down, I really needed to tone up.  My arms were actually pretty strong (I think from lifting a carrying a 20 pound baby around)!  I started back up with the trainer (still only once or twice a week) and she stressed that I really needed to be doing my cardio and start eating more often (I’d gotten into a habit of eating only breakfast, a light lunch, having a Starbucks in the afternoon and then a not-so-great dinner).

So I started jogging again.  And eating better.

And now, I jog with James in the running stroller a few times a week.  James usually falls asleep and I love the workout and the clarity and peace of mind I get after a run.

I love being outside and we’re fortunate to have a park with a 3-mile track nearby.

Last weekend, we went to the beach.  I wore a bikini and didn’t feel embarrassed.  I still am not down to my pre-pregnancy weight- 5 pounds to go, but I’m honestly not concerned with that.  I’m more focused now on gaining muscle, and increasing my cardio.

My brunette hair has been properly dyed back to blond, has grown and been getting regularly cut by my new stylist, and I finally feel like myself again (and my son is almost 14 months old now!)  So 9 months up and 9 months down would’ve been great, but it’s taken me a bit longer.

I shared my story because I know that when I was pregnant, I was really interested in what was going to happen to my body during and after pregnancy.  I would like to be able to say I was all glowy and never felt more beautiful, but for me, the exact opposite was true!  Maybe I’m not that evolved or self-actualized or whatever.

  2. I loved reading this post again--especially since I'm in the midst of this right now. I lost all but 10 pounds pretty quickly and although it's not much, it sits around my middle. I think I'm either going to have to work this time or the 10 lbs are going to sit there. I'm not much of an exerciser but I've been trying to eat better. . .

  4. 4 months post baby and completely envious of your abs! I too lost most of the weight fairly quickly thanks to nursing, but my ab muscles are shot! How did you find the time to work, blog and exercise while James was young? I'm already up at 4:30 so by 8pm, I'm exhausted!

    1. I have counted calories in the past and now I'm at the point where I know about where I need to be each day. My Fitness Pal is a great online too that let's you track your calories. I'm always surprised how fast they add up!

I'm 4 months post baby and feel so weak (I had a 10lber... and my stomach won't let me forget it)- its nice to see other moms out there that are good role models and not the celeb moms that make me feel like total you know what... I just posted my AFTER pic which isn't really an after pic but more like a progress pic. It's a rough road ahead but I will keep picturing your abs when I'm dying on the treadmill lol. Love your blog and very excited about this new venture for you as well!

  14. I feel like you just wrote my exact story of my first pregnancy. However, I did run the first 3 months and walked a lot...but it did me NO good. I gained 55lbs and it was a NIGHTMARE to get the weight off. Good for you for doing it the right way. I will say the second pregnancy went phenomenally better. I only gained 30lbs and would ask myself, "do you REALLY need this ice cream?? Think of those flabby arms." ha ha ha. You are a beautiful momma. Nice work!!

Can you do a post on how you got your stomach skin back to shape? That's the number one complaint I hear from my friends after they have babies (and I'm expecting now)...they talk about the saggy or loose skin and pouch? Your abs and skin look tight and amazing!   17. Wow! 55lbs must have been hard to lose afterward but you did it! I gained less than 30 with my first and second pregnancy and about 44 with my last. It definitely was harder to lose the 44 pounds! This is a great blog because you can encourage your readers to try to keep the weight down to make it easier to lose after the baby is born. I LOVE to eat and I know its hard for some women me included! It's been 13 years since my last "baby" was born and I feel I still have that "baby" weight to lose! You're inspiring me Meg!!!

  25. I just recently found your blog via Pinterest and am so inspired! I have a 4 month old who I only recently stopped nursing (though am still pumping and feeding her breast milk). Regardless, the bonus time I've gained back has helped me realize I can translate into time to work out! I too, was miserable during pregnancy. While not as small or as fit as you were to begin with, I still never used my pregnancy as a license to be lazy nor EAT. However, easier said than done (to maintain a healthy lifestyle while pregnant) when you have food aversions to healthy staples such as chicken, have super-engorged breasts that do not fit in a regular bra let alone a sports bra and have ginormous swollen feet that don't fit in a flip flop let alone a tennis shoe! Working out while pregnant was more for women in the movies - not real life! I've lost all the pregnancy weight 4 mos in (31 lbs) but that's only because I had some extra padding to begin with :) I'd like to lose yet another 30 to reach my goal weight of 140lbs @ 5'4. I plan to incorporate some of your recipes and get moving this week. With any luck I'll drop another 10 before the New Year and keep on going through next summer for my 10 yr college reunion get together in Cabo! PS - I see you're in Houston near Memorial Park and that's even cooler ... a fellow Houstonian myself. Love love love your stories and am subscribed to both your blogs. Take care!

  29. I just found your blog and LOVE it! This is exactly what I needed to see...a real woman, with a real story through this journey of motherhood and losing weight. I have a 4 month old and still have about 15 pounds to lose. I gained 45lbs on a 5'3" frame so I'm carrying a lot of extra weight, and was nowhere near where I wanted to be when I got pregnant. I lost the first 30lbs easily without doing anything really (I think mother nature was on my side here). But these last 15lbs have been sticking to me like white on rice! I started Weight Watchers but haven't had much success with it and have since gotten discouraged. Seeing your blog, and a few other things, I think I'm back on the track to motivation town to start losing weight again. Great blog! You look fabulous!

    1. I hope you stick with it. Those last pounds are HARD to lose but you can do it! If you are on WW, I would talk to a counselor about your issues and work with them closely on the food. You've paid for the advice!

I met up with a Nutritionist about a month ago. I'm a SAHM and have a membership at the gym but not going as much as I should - this has definitely inspired me to get my butt in shape!   31. Megan, your story is so close to mine! I love all the pictures and stories. I was able to lose the 60 that I gained and then the 15 I was carrying before I got pregnant (that I wanted to lose before). I thought I was the only one that gained that much weight, all my friends look like normal after the birth of their babies. Me I looked like and over inflated balloon! Thanks for sharing your story! I know that with my second baby I will be more conscious of my eating and working out, plus chasing a toddler will help. Well, this was certainly encouraging to come across in my Google search of "my baby is 8 months old and I still haven't lost all my baby weight help!" yes, that was seriously what I put in the search box. Clearly I am a little disheartened about how long it has taken for me to lose the weight from my pregnancy (52 lbs gained - 32 to still lose [includes 12 lbs pre-pregnancy I still want to lose]) I have tried what seems like everything: eating healthy - which has never been an issue, cutting unnecessary calories where I can, working out, etc. but, I, like many women apparently, have hit a hurdle I can't seem to get over.. anyway, it's encouraging to see that other mothers have been in or are in a similar situation. Nice to not feel alone, or like I'm failing some how. Thanks for sharing your story and letting me read :)

  33. You really do have to work for it after pregnancy! I had a double mastectomy while pregnant, so I wasn't able to rely on breastfeeding for a calorie burn. It wasn't until he was 6 months old that I started working out again. I have more energy and I truly believe being a healthier ME makes me a better MOM.

  35. I am 5 months post partum and I gained 57 lbs in my pregnancy. I have lost 40 and I would be happy just to lose another 10 and its not happening. It is depressing. I hope I finally make it down like you did.

Wow I absolutely needed this, our stories are almost exactly the same, I was training for bodybuilding before I got pregnant and was in the best shape of my life, I then got pregnant and morning sickness hit me pretty hard so I was pretty much bed ridden and quit exercising all together. Once I felt well enough to actually eat which wasn't till the second trimester I went to town on anything and everything, mostly things I wouldn't have even thought about touching before I got pregnant. Long story short I gained a whopping 70lbs :( I'm 5 and 1/2 months post pregnancy and still have a good 35lbs to lose. Any advice would be great, I'm confident that I can get my body back I just haven't quite found that drive I used have :/

  37. Sorry if this is too personal, but did you have any problems with loose skin on your belly? I was in shape before I gave birth and a got back in shape afterwards, but my belly still has the loose skin..its so frustrating. I gained 70lbs during my pregnancy, I am 5'4.

    1. Yes! My stomach skin is still looser than pre-baby, BUT it has gotten MUCH better slowly over time with weight training and cardio and clean eating. I do planks 5x a week now and that has helped tone my stomach too. It is frustrating I know!

  38. You look amazing! What a great journey! I want to try working out with a trainer but I am so self-concious, I dont like people yelling at me and I have a tendency to be really shy and feel like no matter what I do it's just not going to work for me. I know I shouldn't think like that. Trainers make me feel fat, like "how could you ever let yourself get this way?" I guess it's just my own insecurity... and I should get over it. Any tips on how to boost confidence and power through and not give up?
