Turkey Chili

Here is another high protein meal that I like to make on the weekend, then refrigerate for leftovers throughout the week.  I don't think I ever make it exactly the same way twice, since I'm always tweaking the spices, cooking time, and ingredients.

Below is a basic recipe that you can adjust based on your taste preferences.

  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 1/4 lb extra lean ground turkey
  • 3 cloves of garlic minced
  • chili powder- 2 teaspoons
  • black pepper- 1/2 teaspoon
  • cumin- 4 tablespoons (I like a lot, maybe I use more??)
  • chili beans- 1 or 2 cans, rinsed
  • diced tomatoes, undrained- 1 can 14 oz
  • tomato paste- 1 can 6 oz
  • chicken broth- 1can 14 oz
  • 2% shredded cheese for topping
  • Heat oil in a large dutch oven or pot on medium heat.  Add onions until translucent.
  • Add turkey and break into small pieces.  Cook until browned.
  • Stir in garlic and spices.
  • Add beans.
  • Add tomatoes, tomato paste, and chicken broth.
  • Then I start tasting and adjusting the spices.  I sometimes add a pinch of cayenne, a little salt, and more cumin and/or chili powder.
  • I cook it for about 45 minutes on a low simmer.

  1. We always use ground turkey now for cooking, it always makes us feel better to know we're using a leaner meat.

  2. I'm excited to try this! I've been looking for a new chili recipe. Thanks!

  3. I've been looking for a good turkey chili recipe. Perfect timing! Thanks!

  4. This recipe sounds absolutely delicious! I will definitely (definitely!) try it out soon! x

  5. This is a fantastic recipe!! I made it last week with a few substitutions; instead of trying to get all the spices to the right level, I eliminated all of them and just threw in a packet of low-sodium Taco Seasoning and used ground chicken breast instead of ground turkey. Have since passed it onto 2 friends who loved it as well. Thank you!

  6. This is simple and delicious! Do you really use 4 tbsp of cumin? I haven't had the courage to try that much yet! I added in some diced green pepper as I always try to sneak more veggies in... delish!

  7. how many servings does this recipe yield? Please answer asap!

    1. I'd estimate this recipe serves about 6, depending on your serving size.

  8. I'm trying to add some healthier recipes into our menu, and we tried this a few nights ago. Everyone loved it more than our regular chili! Just enjoyed more for lunch today. Thanks Megan!
